Martin J Bergman, MD FACR FACP

Biography

Dr. Bergman is a practicing rheumatologist with over 20 years of clinical experience.  He received a BA in Chemistry from Oberlin College and an MS in Bacteriology from Wagner College, before beginning his medical education.  After spending 3 years at the Libero Istituto Universitario di Medicina e Chirurgia dell’Aquila, in Italy, he completed his medical education at the Medical College of Wisconsin, receiving his MD degree in 1982.  Dr. Bergman then completed an internship/residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Rheumatology at the Medical College of Pennsylvania before opening his private practice in 1987.  He is Board-Certified in both Internal Medicine and Rheumatology and is a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology and of the American College of Physicians.  Currently, Dr. Bergman has a faculty appointment at the Drexel University College of Medicine, where he is a Clinical Associate and is Chief, Section of Rheumatology at Taylor Hospital, in Ridley Park, PA, where he also maintains an active clinical practice.

Dr. Bergman has been the president of the Delaware County Medical Society, and has been the president of the Philadelphia Rheumatology Society, America’s oldest rheumatology society.  His current research interests are focused primarily on the use of patient self-reported outcomes tools, recognizing both the importance of quantitative measurement in the management of rheumatologic diseases, particularly rheumatoid arthritis, and the ability of the patient to know how much his or her disease is affecting the individual, sometimes (or even, usually) better than the physician.  The results of these works have been published in major national and international journals and have been presented at both the ACR annual scientific meetings and at EULAR.  As a result of these activities, as well as his activities teaching and lecturing on these and other rheumatologic topics, Dr. Bergman has been recognized as a “Top Doc” in Philadelphia Magazine and Main Line Magazine, and has been awarded the 2007 Quality of Life-Professional Education award by the Arthritis Foundation, SE PA chapter.
